Happy chef! The Chef Alliance saved her money!

One of the biggest barriers to operating your own Personal Chef business, and enjoying the rewards of the industry, is the potential for liability, both professional and personal.

If you want to protect your business, and your personal assets, in the event that things don’t go as planned, you need to have the right kind of insurance.

Why Should I Have Insurance?

  • It makes sound business sense.  A mistake, or even a false claim, may cost thousands of dollars to defend, and thousands of dollars to pay for liability.  A few hundred dollars a year provides defense coverage, and covers you for any liability to the limit of your coverage.  Your business and family are protected from financial ruin.
  • Insurance provides credibility, professionalism to your service, and comfort to your customers.
  • Our national clients and retailers require that Personal Chefs providing services have up-to-date liability insurance.  No coverage will mean no referrals for these packages. It’s always tempting to forego this expense, on the assumption that unexpected surprises can be kept at bay.  Is it worth the risk?  After all, there is a real risk that you can be ruined financially as a result of a single mishap.

Because of the inherent risks posed by the handling and preparation of food, more and more clients are requiring that the Chefs they hire provide proof of insurance coverage.  Without it, you may have to pass up valuable business opportunities to a competitor, because you have no insurance coverage in place.

With liability insurance, you will never have to turn down another job, and can sleep without the fear that you could be sued personally and professionally, and lose everything you have ever earned.

How do I get Insured?

Currently, The Chef Alliance only offers liability insurance for Chefs in Canada.  The Chef Alliance has hundreds of members across Canada, and has designed and negotiated a Personal Chef insurance package designed specifically for our industry.

This coverage is about 75% less than what you could get it for if you applied directly to an insurance company.  We know, because we check comparables on a regular basis!

You can be insured within a few days and receive your policy, which is underwritten by Aviva Insurance Company.  Simply register with The Chef Alliance, and we'll send you details!

Frequently Asked Questions about Liability Insurance
Does the insurance cover me working in a restaurant?
No. Restaurants will (we hope!!) have their own liability insurance should anything go wrong
Does the insurance cover me for large events, e.g. tradeshows?   There are a number of factors involved that can affect the answer to this question. For example:
- what are the requirements of the event organisers?
- what is your participation in the event?  Are you being hired to hand out product samples, are you catering for hundreds of people, are you doing a cooking demo?
- where is the event being held, and how many days does it go on for?
- are you preparing food on-site or off-site?

In some cases, a simple rider added to your policy will suffice; in other cases, you may be required to take out additional coverage for that event.  Our experienced insurance agent will be able to answer your questions, and will quote you at the best rates available should this be required.
What service does the standard coverage apply to?   It applies to Personal Chef services conducted in the client's home, with up to 20 guests.  Food must be prepared on-site, not in a commercial kitchen or elsewhere.

It can apply to the traditional personal chef service (customised meals), cooking classes, dinner parties, BBQs etc.

The purchase or service of alcohol is not permitted.  Wine recommendations and the use of alcohol as a cooking ingredient (where the alcohol is 'burned off') are permitted.
I have access to a kitchen in a local church.  Can I prepare food there and then transport it to a client's home?   Unfortunately, using church kitchens or those in service clubs, organizations and the like for cooking food and then transporting it to a client's home (catering) is unsafe.  You would not be covered by your liability insurance, so should anything go wrong, you would be wholly responsible.  This could be a costly mistake that could cause you financial ruin.

It is no different than cooking the food in your home and transporting it to your client's home, which is a violation of most health and food safety regulations.  The last thing we all want is a newspaper article that says a "Personal Chef Charged for Causing Deaths".

The Chef Alliance does not approve of or endorse any of its members providing catering or personal chef services except as permitted by the laws and regulations of our respective jurisdictions, and as covered in the liability insurance policy.

The insurance policy that we offer our Chefs (currently only in Canada) covers in-home (i.e. in the client's home) Personal Chef Services for up to 20 people.  Additional insurance may be purchased for events with more than 20 people.

Should you wish to provide catering services, you should purchase catering insurance and also use legal, inspected kitchens, as well as use the proper transportation (e.g. refrigerated van) to carry prepared foods.
What does similar coverage cost in Canada?   We conduct regular surveys of liability insurance to ensure that we have the best priced coverage to meet the needs of our chefs.  The latest quotes that we received ranged from $850-1250+ for a single policy, so membership at every level costs much less, and includes a wide range of benefits, making it even more economical!
I do not live in Canada - can I get insurance through The Chef Alliance?   Currently, we are unable to cover Chefs outside Canada for Liability Insurance.  This is the reason why only Canadian Chefs can upgrade to Silver, Gold & Platinum levels.  However, we are certainly looking into this for the main countries where our Chefs are located.  Keep checking back for updates!
